Meet the Chingona Crew

The Chingona Crew runs for someone extraordinary.

Sandra was a Family Practice Medical Doctor, one of the few Spanish-speaking doctors in San Jose.  She was a wonderful mother to her son and daughter, who are now 16 and 12, an amazing daughter, and sister to 6 brothers. The Chingona Crew started participating in the Teal Run after Sandra passed from ovarian cancer on August 17, 2023.

Here’s what her wife, Adriana, shared with us about building her crew: 

My sister-in-law found The Teal Run and asked if we wanted to join.  Without hesitation, we said yes.  The Teal Run brings us all together to run or walk in remembrance of our loved one, Sandra Torres, who is always present in our hearts. Besides being a medical doctor, she was a marathoner, a professional dancer, a ballet folklorico extraordinaire, and a bodybuilder.  In her honor, we continue her path of exercising together. 

What does the Teal Run mean to your crew?  

It’s about bringing family together to exercise, run with Sandra, and then gathering at the house to break bread together.  We raise funds for the Teal Run so that others don’t lose family to ovarian cancer.  There must be a solution to preventing this disease from taking root in women’s bodies.  We must find a treatment to give women a fighting chance to counter ovarian cancer. 

For those thinking about building a team, any advice, insights, or inspiration to share? 

I hope you decide to join us in building a Teal Team.  This September 20, 2026 will mark our 4th time that we get involved.  Chingona Crew in English means Badass Crew because Sandra Torres epitomized that.  We run in her honor and to always remember her badass life, her Chingona Life.
